What Have We Lost?
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. And the ark of God was captured, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured” (1 Samuel 4: 10, 11, 17 ESV).
Watching the insurrectionists praying to God, invoking the Name of Jesus in the Senate Chamber makes me wonder if the church has allowed the gospel of Jesus the Christ to be hijacked. What will it take to reclaim the truth? The world is watching and silence from the church that Jesus gave his life for, modeling sacrificial love, mercy and grace belittles the essence of his ministry. This is not the time for silence. There is a false narrative being promoted by people who want to name themselves Christian without reading the Bible, or confessing their self-righteousness. Holding up a Bible for a photo opportunity, or unlawfully breaking in and destroy government property while giving thanks to Jesus for making it all possible, does not make you a Christian. And if the church remains silent, many will be confused and deceived into thinking that this is what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Violently ranting and raving, threatening law enforcement agents, and terrorizing duly elected law makers because your candidate lost an election, is not the Christian faith in action. It’s white supremacy in action. It’s the expression of unchecked white dominance. It is a picture of inaction and silence from real disciples. Church, let’s get the narrative untwisted now! Let’s be more vocal and visible in our homes and communities. Let’s call out injustice in the Name of Jesus and act righteously according to his commands. Let’s take back what has been stolen. Jesus sets the record straight in Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
We honor Jesus, and the work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr who committed his life to advocating for the poor and oppressed of this nation, when we stand in the truth of the gospel.
